DESIGN CONSULTANT
Avery Berkel.
Avery is well known for their supermarket weighing machines. These machines are similar in size and complexity to the desktop computer, being full of microprocessors. Avery's vast product range was now 4 years old, and so needed updating to incorporate the new technology, the new ideas, and to improve and solve problems found in the field. I was deeply involved in these changes, carrying out some design studies and eventually taking the results of these studies into their final product range. Generally designing for tooling modification, but in some cases for new tooling. Now involved in using Pro/MECHANICA integrated and independent for FEA to analyse and improve the design. Some report writing to backup both design and analysis.
Design considerations:-
(a) Designing to IP54 (food equipment, to be washed and sprayed with water, then wiped down).
(b) For EMC (A number of disruptive devices, a wireless LAN, 2 or 3 LCD displays and a keyboard taking high power).
(c) Designing for UL94V1 and higher (high resistance to fire and smoke)
(d) Considered an important member in the FMEA meetings. Taking away and exploring the results.
Using ProEngineer 2001, PDM and Intralink 3.1 and Pro/Mechanica for FEA analysis.

SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Punch Graphix (Xeikon) Nv.
(contract)
A continuation of the project started by Agfa, with the digital colour printer. Xeikon bought the design from Agfa. Again working fully on the 'fuser' area and interfacing this into the heart of the digital printing machine. The fuser area had many moving components, so the consideration for mechanisms was important. Gear drives chosen with stepper motors. Designed in a modula way to allow for easy service and assembly (many consumables expected to be replaced or cleaned). Designing, building and studying many prototypes. Eventually designing for production. Expected to use advance manufacturing and design techniques due to the high volume of sales. This incorporated many moulded plastics, die cast alloys, extruded parts, spring devices and designed advance sheet metal components (formed, punched, laser cut). FMEA, tolerance analysis and FEA and analytical analysis used to prove and advance ideas. Finally deeply involved in lifetime testing and configuration. Writing reports on the results. ProEngineer (release 18 - 2000i2) and PDM.
