I'm offering
With a wealth of experience in the not-for-profit world, my passion is helping organisations to uncover their 'story' and tell it in a compelling way; the first step to achieving a strong position within a competitive marketplace. I love to enter organisations as an objective 'third eye' to unearth their narratives and present them to the outside world.
My sense of vision is complemented by a talent for captivating content and copy. I welcome the challenge of seeing how much can be achieved on even the tightest of budgets and over the years I've developed a highly effective integrated approach to communications and marketing campaigns, generating impressive results for minimal spend.
I like to work by slotting into an organisation and working in a holistic way, collaborating closely to understand and define what's required. Once we've set the strategic objectives and direction, I can then get 'hands on' and begin turning strategy into reality! I love the creative process of crafting high quality content for digital and offline collateral, generating media coverage and bringing campaigns to life.
Meanwhile I'm careful to keep strategic objectives in sharp focus, continually measuring and evaluating to ensure that business requirements are being met and frequently reporting on progress.

Freelance communications/change specialist
Aspens Charities.
Aspens is a social care charity with bases all over the south east of England, offering residential and day care to people with learning disabilities, complex needs and autism. Since summer last year I've worked full time with this client, advising on positioning and establishing a communications function:
• Complete re-development of the website, www.aspens.org.uk, including design and content creation. I collaborated across the charity to create an active focal point for the wider Aspens community of clients, parents and carers; a showcase of its work for the Local Authorities which provide much of its funding and for anybody wishing to learn more about the charity and those it supports
• I revived the charity's social media platforms - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - boosting activity from a very low level to active, flourishing hubs of activity for the 'Aspens family' and far beyond. A snapshot of Facebook's organic post reach, for example, shows an increase from 444 people in August last year to 4,655 six months later.
• I write virtually all the content for Aspens' website: visit www.aspens.org.uk/news to see a multitude of thought leadership pieces and news items I've written including this one, which gives a carers' view of lockdown.
• The Covid-19 crisis offered a crucial window for Aspens to raise its profile and achieve leverage by reflecting problems in its sector. I used #careforthecarers and #lifeinlockdown as central themes for an integrated awareness and fundraising campaign and used blogs, letters to editors and social media to target central government with the message that Aspens and the care industry might not survive the crisis without additional funding. This generated local and trade media coverage and a 3-minute diary piece on BBC London.

2018 - 2019
job
Assistant Director, Communications and Marketing
Breast Cancer Care.
An extended maternity cover contract at the UK's leading breast cancer care charity, during which I led its incumbent communications team to substantially increase its national media profile, brand awareness and fundraising income, taking the charity to the most successful Breast Cancer Awareness Month in its history. Media coverage by volume was its highest ever, rising to 33 from 56 in the Gorkana Charity Barometer; fundraising rose to its highest level in five years for the month of October and, after four years of steady decline, prompted awareness rose by two points in the NFP Synergy barometer.
I helped the charity to achieve these great results through working with team members to define roles, to upskill and to provide clear direction and motivation. I worked closely with the senior management team and board of trustees to increase understanding of the importance of marketing and communications, encouraging greater investment for greater return, and clarified the charity's positioning through enlisting a taskforce of pro bono advisors, including Facebook.
