UI Consultant
Gladstone MRM.
One of Gladstone's web products called "Connect" was developed quite a few years ago in the Microsoft stack, a combination of .NET and Web Forms and for some time it has been used by many of their customers.
Connect is an application that is made available via login to leisure club members, so that they can book slots for the sports that they participate in. It allows them to pay for their bookings online and helps them manage their activities.
Recently one of Gladstone's key clients commented on that it doesn't work well when viewed on mobile devices. They realised that this is something that would need to be addressed but they didn't have the resources in-house to develop such a solution.
This is where I have come in to transform the product into one which does work on mobile devices without sacrificing any of it's current functionality on the desktop. Primarily my task has been to update it's UI by mixing in Bootstrap 3 functionality so that the website can now be used on mobile. A very challenging project bearing in mind that the decision was taken not to re-develop the product from the ground up but to modify the current code-base.
Summary of skills used
* Tortoise SVN
* Bootstrap 3
* JQuery
* LESS/CSS
* HTML5
* C#
* RWD

AngularJS Developer
unknown.
When I started with the AA they were just adopting the Agile methodology but weren't using Jira at first, this was introduced in the first couple of months of me being there. I had some experience of the practice previously so that helped me understand what they were going through. It takes time to get used to it, a big change for any company to undertake. So it was interesting being involved in this transition and seeing the benefits of daily scrums taking shape and how the team could see the benefits from the very start.
The first project I was involved with there had only just begun, "Windscreens" was both a mobile and desktop web app (almost responsive) with a clean and easy to follow journey based around allowing you to select which piece of glass had been damaged, the size of the damage and then your details. This results in your details being relayed on to a call centre who would then call you and confirm when a patrol would be able to visit you and carry out the repair.
You can see it in action via https://www.theaa.com/windscreen/
I then worked briefly on "mobile road" an existing app, to help with the work that needed doing for the AA's summer campaign, codenamed "Olivia". Part of this project included the offer of 15 months for the price of 12. This required some extra data plus logic being added so that in the future such offers could be more readily added in less time. Some HTML needed editing around these new deals in order to make sure the right message was begin conveyed in the user journey.
Finally I worked on their "Home Membership" project, part of the AA's diversification into other markets and the services they offer for boiler repair and breakdown cover in the event of your heating system breaking down at home. This time around, I was the only JS developer working on it and also helped the two HTML/CSS/SASS Designers get to grips with Grunt, Git, Jenkins and so on. Our Scrum Master was often asking me about the technicalities,simply because he was really interested in how it all works. I enjoyed doing that as much as writing the code and this was commented on by the team and the management alike. So left a good impression on those people and I was commended for doing so.
This project was entirely responsive and it's architecture different to the Windscreen project I had worked on previously. It was completed just before my 6 month contract came to an end.
Summary of skills used for all of the work I did with the AA
* Git - git extensions, Bash
* Jenkins/Gerrit
* AngularJS for all 3 of the projects I worked on
* RESTful Ajax requests
* Node and NPM
* Grunt, Maven, Karma/Jasmine Unit Testing

Huntsworth Health Ltd.
● Nitrogen are an internal agency for HH and specialise in building interactive HTML5 based applications for iPad presentations. These presentations are typically used by Salespeople to market pharmaceutical products to their clients.
● Nitrogen work on the basis of using Salesforce on the iPads to which the HTML5 applications are synced. This makes it easy for them to pick up their iPads at the start of each day, sync them with the main server and have all of their presentations ready for the day ahead.
● I worked on the Italian version of a presentation for a drug called "Resolor". It comprised of 16 slides (or HTML pages in reality) which the user can swipe between on the tablet. The slides all vary, some with animation.
● Key skills used were HTML5, CSS3, Javascript (jQuery and it's animation capabilities)
● The sort of animations we used would for example display a bullet list, one item at a time, with a 2 second delay in between each and all items would fade into the page.
● Many of the animations are interactive, making it possible for the presenter to talk about the product, tap an area on the screen to reveal more of the page etc.

Rubicon Software Ltd.
● I worked on one massive project for Rubicon during the year I worked for them. This project was for a company called Segen, who are a large Solar technology wholesaler based in Aldershot Hampshire
○ The project started life as a Classic ASP site that had been written mostly by the CEO of Segen and another person. He had called upon Rubicon for their help as his business started to take off and naturally his skills were required in steering his business from success to success, making massive profits to the tune of multi-millions.
○ Just before I joined them, Rubicon had taken on a team in Delhi, who were tasked with re-writing the ASP code in a more modern technology, Microsoft MVC3.
○ I joined them at this crossover stage having knowledge of ASP from some years back and being au-fait with C#, SQL, ASP.NET, HTML, CSS and Javascript. I had at this point very little MVC experience other than some personal projects I had worked on. Rubicon weren't concerned about that, as they had never touched upon MVC at all. So this was a golden opportunity to really learn MVC properly in a commercial large-scale project.
○ My day-to-day work initially was to support the old system and to get a beta test environment up and running for the new technology. The code being fresh out of Delhi! We had set some Segen staff up with the UAT/Beta test process, to get feedback and bug reports. During this time, I spent time on and off site, talking to the people at Segen about their needs and feeding it back to Rubicon. So put my consultancy skills to use there.
○ Half-way through the first 6 months, just as Christmas was upon us, Segen gave us the go ahead to drop the old system and bring in the new! This was a bit of a surprise, as we weren't really planning to do so until the New Year begun.
○ We ended up splitting the work between India, myself and one other person in the UK, given the time difference between here and there. We worked on the higher priority fixes and modifications in England and the longer term jobs were issued to India. They would then check changes back into SVN (Tortoise SVN), I would build the test server, we would test and then iterate.
○ I also doubled up as customer liaison support engineer, helping them analyse their problems, working out solutions. I would then take on some for myself and delegate others to India.
○ The main Portal site occupied the majority of my time and through that I got involved with MVC3, C#, HTML5, CSS3, SQL, TDD, Teamcity and supported the
○ server/environment configuration too working with IIS 7.5, using it's publishing facilities to push over changes made. We also made extensive use of SVN with this project, critical for such a big international team.
○ Not quite so intense, was the work we did on their sales website which you can view at http://www.segen.co.uk and this had been developed externally in MVC2
MB Interactive, St Albans, Hertfordshire
Web Developer (Contract 3 months fixed)
May 2011 till end of July 2011
● C# 3.5/4.0, ASP.NET SQL, 2000/2008 R2, Microsoft Azure, Photoshop, CSS3, HTML
● I have been working with a few projects including:
○ ClickSafe Developers Hub
○ St Albans Wood Recycling Centre - http://www.stalbanswoodrecycling.org.uk/
○ FFEI Life Sciences
○ FFEI Engineers Portal
○ Mapac Admin for the Mapac website - http://mapac.com/
● For each of the above projects I was given a set of PSD files that had been created by MB's in-house designer and sliced them up in Photoshop. I then created the HTML templates making use of CSS3 to apply styling and layout to the pages based on a 960 grid system. I was also responsible for developing code at all levels to breathe functionality into the sites.
● FFEI Life Sciences has it's own basic CMS that I developed from the ground up. I also made use of some advanced CSS3 features to make photos elipsical
● Both FFEI engineers portal and Mapac admin are back-end systems for two very different businesses.
● FFEI enables engineers for FFEI to log installations that they have made and to keep track of training they have received
● Mapac Admin enables the staff at Mapac to add new school products to their online catalogue and bespoke school information for schools that have their own embroidered designs
