Brent AMHP Service Experience
I have 10 years wealth of experience as a practising Approved Mental Health Professional AMHP. In these years, I have worked with utmost aim of providing quality service to people who use the service. I have worked across three London Boroughs and so have had the opportunity of within diverse communities in terms of culture, ethnicity and geographical location. I work within legal framework of MHA, MCA and principles of Code of Practice CoP whilst incorporating my social work skills and values. I produce impeccable reports to assessments within required timeframe.
My day to day tasks as an AMHP includes, taking referrals, processing and prioritising allocation for a Mental Health Act Assessment MHAA. Plan complex mhaa; gather information from relevant sources, referrers, treating team, care coordinators, family/nearest relative, other agencies as appropriate. Risk assesses case in terms of if police assistance is required. Write court statement and obtain relevant warrants if necessary. Liaise with police for assistance in executing warrant. Check if access to property would be an issue. If so, organise a locksmith. If property is council owned, contact housing department and/or housing officer and request their attendance at MHAA if this might be helpful. Housing officer may also have a good working relationship with the person being assessed in which case distress would be minimal. Care coordinator if they have one is also encouraged to attend during assessment if this would be helpful.
I also work in a hospital setting - I do the same as above except that majority of the assessment on the wards is on patients who are already on section 2 of the MHA. So it would be assessing for section 3 of the act.. I do a lot of liaison with nearest relatives in ascertain their views especially on if they have objections to an application for section 3 being made. If a NR objects, we could initiate to displace them if there is a risk of harm to others from the person being assessed. Or, if theperson is a risk to self, and lacks capacity to understand the risk.
With referrals from the wards, I liaise with ward staff, doctors and also attend review meetings for the purpose of gathering information. I also do MHAA on patients who are on section5 2 which is a hold section. Again liaise with relevant professionals and family as appropriate. I take part in MDT meetings as and when necessary and offer advice to other professionals on mental health act and mental capacity act issues.
Section 136 of MHA - I do section 136 urgent assessments. These involve liaison with the police, services in the person's locality, including hospital bed if required.

Out of Hours Work Experience
I have experience in out of hours work. Prior to my current employment, I regularly worked in Harrow Extended Hour Team EHT from 2010 to 2015 when I left to join Brent Approved Mental Health Professional AMHP Team. EHT hours were 4pm to 11pm. Typically, tasks commonly went into early hours of next day. I lone worked, taking referrals, assessing risks' and prioritising in terms of immediate response and intervention whilst being mindful of my duty to people and accountability of my actions.
I visited clients at home sometimes with police and assess situations in some cases where direct interventions were required. There were cases of child protection issues, where children have been placed with foster carers to prevent risks until next morning. There cases of homelessness too and when children were involved must be taken seriously. If options of family or friends are not available or not appropriate, then bed and breakfast must be considered within the legal requirement of Children Act 1989 section 17 (10c) .
• Providing support with housing and help with applying for welfare benefits.
