I'm offering
I have worked as a UX Researcher (UR), Designer and Information Architect for 14 years. Two years ago, I decided I wanted to do more research work since it provides me with a lot of job satisfaction. It is a discipline that precludes design thinking. Itβs listening, emphasising and developing mental models of what user sees in an idea or existing product β the pain points, user needs. Only after research concludes (or reaches a point) does any design begin and here there is an emphasis on pointing to key findings and recommendations that you make β testable wireframes, prototypes β the results of which are analysed. Having experience of UX design does help. I have done more. non-digital product research too, for Virgin Media, John Wiley and EMAP. Before becoming a UR I worked as UX Designer and that work is included in this CV.

My experience
2019 - 2019
job
User Researcher
Food Standards Agency.
Discovery phase for a new timesheet program - Interviewing FSA and contract staff and those out in the field. The work I did was gather feedback via visits, observation, surveys and interviews. In busy animal plants, often in cramped offices. We took note of the environment as well as the number of desktops available. Connectivity was accessed too since this could be an issue.

2019 - 2019
job
User Researcher
Scottish Government.
Social Services - digital transformation - The Scottish Government is restructuring its online social services. I worked on a digital form designed to replace the hard copy version seen as intimidating and aggressive. Management wanted a form offering more dignity to users (mostly parents who mistrusted the existing paper form). I conducted one- to- one testing (including work through interpreters) and chaired workshops with parents who often themselves were impaired in some way.

2018 - 2019
job
User Researcher
Department for Education.
Retraining opportunities (alpha) - The Government wants to introduce a National Retraining Service (NRS) for those whose work is threatened by increasing automation. The proposal is to include a self-assessment tool, followed by a listing of suitable job types, training and finally job opportunities. A key element is continuous support from the DfE throughout retraining. As part of a dedicated team, I conducted alpha research then testing the concept using a developing prototype over three rounds. We synthesised results and from this produced key findings. We were working towards an alpha assessment.

2018 - 2018
job
User Researcher
General Dynamics.
Testing a non-digital product - Interviewing and testing a new command radio with troops across the south of England who manned military vehicles (called platforms). I tested the radio in labs and on platforms. I rode tank simulators to understand the difficulty troops had multi-tasking using equipment such as radios when on the move over difficult terrain.

2018 - 2018
job
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - User Researcher
GDS's Digital Service Standards.
Research planning and discovery work - HSE will follow GDS's Digital Service Standards (DSS). The new site will be a complex rebuild, incorporating the Health and Safety Laboratory (hsl.gov.uk). I analysed existing research work, identifying the known audience and others too and then drew up a research plan in line with GDS standards. I championed research stressing the need to know user needs. I did some tactical research, but worked mostly on the research plan, I adopted the assumption that agile would be adopted at some point since this was an essential prerequisite for being GDS compliant. This would involve significant changes in work culture.

2018 - 2018
job
User Researcher / Information Architect
Public Health England (PHE).
constructing a new site structure and proposing a new taxonomy for health professionals - Early, research showed the principle problem for PHE users, particularly scientists, was finding relevant information. I generate evidence-based user-needs to support proposed changes to some GDS templates. The principle issue was the structure of the GDS browse pages. The limits of the on-page navigation structure forced some PHE content into box accounts. I undertook an Information Architecture exercise too, designed to expose hidden content. I did this by proposing restructuring the current site into ten major topics. I sold this idea to stakeholders, staff and site users. I questioned GDS's taxonomy structure and the lack of page navigation features. Scientists struggled finding information on the GDS site. So, user needs were easily generated from the significant amount of feedback we got from them.

2017 - 2017
job
Senior UX Designer
NHS Digital.
Digital services and apps library - Using the GDS prototyping tool, I designed part of the interface of a library for local NHS online services and endorsed health apps. I also worked on conceptual designs for a digital community where app entrepreneurs could meet and share ideas and where the NHS will eventually post requests for apps and wearable products. I helped storyboarded the requirements and journey of those wishing to access their health records online. I supported research work, attending test labs and doing some one-one interviews to better understand this.

2017 - 2017
job
User Researcher
Barnet Borough Council.
Content comes first - I proposed the Council do more discovery work, particularly around content structure and provision. The principle third-party company running the digital transformation program had focused on CMS replacement rather than committing to improving site-wide user experience and consistent, accessible, interface designs. I generated a digital sitemap to view analytical data, conducted a content audit and assessed accessibility. I then wrote a content and research strategy doc focusing on IA, what to test and accessibility. A key driver was improving user journeys.

2016 - 2016
freelance
UX Consultant
Oxfam.
The digital future - Together with the Head of BA, I worked on UX strategy to provide direction for developing Oxfam's digital domain. I held meetings with Oxfam management to gain insights and form a picture of their ambition. I helped considered costs and time versus benefits. The conclusion was a strategic roadmap document presented to senior management.

2016 - 2016
job
UX Designer/User researcher
unknown.
Controlling one's own pension- I redesigned pages and key user journeys for a secure personalised online 'pension portal' for the 360,000 USS members. There, they could manage their pensions. I undertook research and designed a testable clickable Axure prototype to represent the concept of a new design.

2015 - 2015
job
User Researcher
Buckinghamshire County Council.
Research for Service Design - The council's website was to become more a service rather than simply a poorly structured information hub. As part of an agile team, I worked on an exemplar project focusing on parents seeking schools for their children. I undertook discovery work together with other members of the team. We talked to parents and teachers and listened to parent's issues when in the Call Centre. I then ran a conceptual design afternoon, distilling this research into key findings. I then generated personas, user journeys, user stories and a testable low-fidelity prototype. Test results were analysed resulting in more research. The final design was shown to Councillors in a 'Show and tell' session, in effect a GDS alpha assessment.

2015 - 2015
job
Senior UX Designer
Vinson and Elkins.
Fast, lean UX/Agile development and design - I worked in a cross-functional team developing a new site for a large US law firm. The Product owner, Account manager and I held long meetings with the client helping them define what they wanted from the site. We then worked up or changed designs sometimes in real time. I worked with the designer, designing responsive mobile first interfaces. We often arrived in the office in the morning to find substantial new requests for changes-
