Employed as a Project Engineering Manager, with three (3) NPI Engineers working for me plus one (1) Senior NPI Engineer.
This is a very responsible, high pressure position with 48 new projects on the go, and 14 different customers. These projects are at various stages of the APQP process and need to be driven by myself and the NPI engineers. As a supplier to the automotive OEM's deadline dates are not negotiable so good project management is prime. I have to ensure that the 'attention to detail' is maintained and that we do not miss key date milestones in the project plan.
I deal a lot with the end customer as well as tooling suppliers.
My skills are enormously varied and am an asset to any organization. I report directly to the Managing Director and am a part of a 13-strong management team. We are a tier two supplier into the automotive industry.
Our Company is enjoying a substantial growth and is poised to become the most profitable company in group.
We are a IATS16949 accredited company.

Employed as a Production Engineer, supplying into the automotive industry. We were turning over in the region of three and a half million pounds per month and were accredited and complied with TS16949 and ISO 14001 requirements. My function was to design manufacturing processes including tool design, from original quotations through to final PPAP submission and implementation. I placed all tooling business and monitored in house tooling manufactured though our toolroom which was equipped with CNC machining centers and wire erosion facilities. I was responsible for the full APQP process including PFMEA, Control Plans, SOP's. I monitored and managed numerous projects simultaneously including the installation of a three new 200 ton presses and a new CNC 3-axis milling machine. I managed a million-pound capital investment program which took me to Europe to source machinery.
I spent some time with Kyocera in Dusseldorf to enable me to implement a productivity improvement program on our CNC milling machines.
I drove numerous projects to source and install bespoke automated machinery using the latest vision / camera technology.

Responsible for the output and efficiency of 50 employees, turning over 24 million pounds a year. A modern 'world class' company supplying precision components into a variety of industries, including Aerospace (Rolls-Royce), Hybrid car development, Cern (Hadron Collider), Formula 1 teams and the MOD, working to tight tolerances as close as 5 microns.
I controlled a Press Shop, CNC Machining, Wire Erosion and Stores Receiving areas. Reported weekly to Operations Director on current items.
Strong discipline and planning are my strengths whilst keeping a good balance of being a team player at the same time being fair.
In order to keep control, I used KPI'S and employ other management tools such as APQP, 5S etc. whilst working closely with Quality, Maintenance and Purchasing Managers. The MRP system we used was similar to SAP and based on a buffer management design which looks at delivery date and back schedules as per routing to give latest start dates by department. We also ran a intranet based IMS system.
Delivery performance and quality performance were the foundations of the business.
We are accredited to DNV and have attained ISO9001 and are working to implement ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 by February this year. We run on LEAN manufacturing principles and adopt the principles of 'Theory of Constraints'
Our products are exported around the world and can compete with other world class manufacturers.
This 10 month contract was invaluable in enabling me to understand the business differences between the UK and SA. Particularly with respect to labour relations, environmental, and health and safety issues.

I was in the seating division and was responsible for the design of manufacturing process of a number of different projects, including tool design and placing tooling business with service providers, and implementation of systems. I would monitor progress and authorize progress payments. In this function it was imperative to monitor and track progress and the necessary corrective action timeously to keep the overall project to an acceptable timing plan. The function continued until final commissioning of the final production process. As a process engineer it was imperative that the overall timing of the various projects remained on track and that the critical path was identified and managed accordingly. I would use gant charts etc to monitor.
