Design Engineer Alfa Laval Ashbrook Simon-Hartley
unknown.
Alfa Laval Ashbrook Simon- Hartley is one of the UK's leading engineering environmental business
providing products, services and solutions that deliver clean water and remove the waste from wastewater in ways that minimise impact on the environment.
During this period I have worked on various new projects and on-going projects in order to achieve
warranty guarantees and close out on all traditional equipment installs. The projects I have been
involved in are as follows.
Wigan WwTW 24-off Rectangular Distributors (Replacement of Existing)
This is a new design of Rectangular Distributor replacing an existing installation. The existing
installation operated on low level tracks located on the floor and moved up and down the beds using
a method of ropes from a winding house. The new installation scope consisted of new Rails located on supporting high level structural steel work either side of the trough wall. The Rectangular
Distributor has a drive unit mounted on the carriage and is powered by means of a catenary system.
I was responsible for the design and verification through calculation of all the supporting Structural
Steelwork approximately 143M in length per bed, rail supporting shoe design for site installation
working in conjunction with sub-contract supplier and development of catenary arrangement also in conjunction with sub-contract supplier. From concept to approved design for all the above
mentioned areas I was responsible for design verification and all associated detail design drawings.
The project has gone to program on schedule and continuing to be installed over the next 18
months.
Ashford STW 16-off 380MSL Column 42.7M Bed Dia. (Replacement of Existing)
In order to close out customers issues/concerns on site I undertook a complete design review of the existing proposal. The main issue was that the column was falling over during normal operation. All
details were reviewed from first principles to final design to which the conclusion that the design
was on the upper limits of operation but was within the acceptable design criteria in order to perform adequately and over the life span in the guarantee. Further to these conclusions I attended
site to see all distributors that were installed to form a further view of the issues/concerns from the client. The issue was clearly visible on-site inspection the supporting structure of the duck foot which
was designed and supplied by the client was not structurally sound and was under performing under
normal operating conditions when in rotation. This conclusion was offered to the client and discussed verbally at site where the structure could be seen under performing and the client
accepted this. Remedial work was undertaken to the supporting steelwork structure by the client and the issues/concerns were closed out.
Canwick WwTW 12-off Rectangular Distributors. (Replacement of Existing)
In order to close out customer issues/concerns on site. I undertook a site survey to review their
issues/concerns. These were in relation to the wheel and rails coming into contact in some areas of
the installation. In brief there were some alignment errors between the main supporting frame and the perpendicular alignment in the wheel chassis. Rectification works was carried out on site under
my supervision in order to eradicate this issue. This was eradicated by re-alignment of the wheel
chassis to the main supporting frame and drilled and pinned through both fabrications in order to
achieve a permanent fix. Subject to this a retro-fit of two guide rollers across the diagonals of the wheel chassis was fitted to eliminate the wheels coming into contact with the rail in order to satisfy
the clients fears. This is now closed out and is currently going through its warranty period and preforming well with the client. I will remain close to this project during the next twelve month
period.
Weston-Super-Mare STW 2-off ST60 Drum Thickener. (New Install)
There was a defect in one of the ST60 Drum Thickener's installed on site. During the commissioning
period the under pan had developed a crack resulting in product leaking out. I went to site to evaluate this issue and to track down the cause. On inspection of the defect it was quite obvious that
the centre of the drum was not running concentric. Further inspection revealed the fabrication of the Centre Ring was approximately 6mm out of concentricity. Therefore the resulting forces were
being taken up by the centre bearing housing in operation and therefore causing extreme loads on the pan and associated bearing housing thus causing fatigue on the weld seam local to this area.
Whilst this machine was in standby I developed a new design of centre ring in order to greatly
improve the concentricity of the operation of the drum. Further to this additional supporting
steelwork was retro-fitted under the pan to further strengthen the design and give confidence to the
client. This rectification was carried out on both Machines and the client signed off on the installation.
Skelmersdale STW 2-off Rotary Distributors (Replacement of Existing)
The rotary distributors required the ability to rotate under Jet Reaction. The current drive train deign for this installation had no means of dis-engagement as it was directly driven via a hollow shaft
directly mounted on the centre shaft on the rotary column. The existing drive trains were removed from site in order to evaluate and take Jet Reaction torque values in relation to the clients received
flow characteristics. Once all data had been harvested I developed a new drive train proposal
incorporating a clutch. Using the back dive torque as measured on site 2012Nm and working closely with SEW Eurodrive and Stromag the clutch supplier the design was born. This has been
manufactured and installed at Skelmersdale to meet the free rotation during power fail conditions
that the Client had requested. All ALM (Access, Lifting & Maintenance) requirements were
considered within the design proposal due to the adverse position and limited space required for
this installation. This has been a cradle to grave exercise as it was a new design that was
manufactured and assembled in the Stoke Works and retro-fitted at site.

I have taken full responsibility of the design using the customer's specific technical requirements and PID'S. This has involved designing bespoke multi-level platforms for the THP, access stairways,
escape routes, pressure vessels, connecting pipework, supporting steel work, valve racks/supports and insulation of vessels, site installation and shipping requirements. All design and manufacture has
been strictly controlled through third party inspectorate as stated to the current PED/ASME/AISC
requirements. All design work undertaken has been modelled using SolidWorks 2010, AutoCad Plant
3D dynamic P&ID's tagging of all valves and instruments using all associated software add ons.
Development of Design Dept. process within SES to meet all accredited standards. Development of
drawing numbering system in order to align with current business system Mamut. Training and support of existing staff in all areas to achieve this standard and level of detail. All drawings are
produced using standard library features in order to be exported out as BOM (Bill of materials)
encompassing full traceability for standard parts and all structural steelwork. This was done from the ground up in order to maximise the SES business and to feed all downstream systems

Bill of Materials Co-Ordinator
Bentley Motors Ltd.
Bentley Motors are one of the leading manufacturers in the automotive industry. Within the BOM
team I was responsible for the bill of materials for Body train and Chassis across three products
Continental, Arnage and Fying Spur. I produced bill of materials which was driven by the design
department in order to feed downstream systems mainly purchasing but also the spare parts dept.
The parts are structured using Catia V5 taking into consideration where these parts will be installed in the cars depending on which line they are being manufactured. Parts were uploaded into SAP
which fed the VW group systems in order to gain interchange ability throughout all VW group
products for example VW models, Audi Models, Seat Models, Skoda Models.

knowledge of manufacturing/processing machine drives and mechanisms coupled with hydraulic/pneumatic principles. All my designs are electronically controlled and this is taken into
consideration when planning my design. I have also designed hot air ducting, pipework for gas/oil and all services for kilns and dryers. Within this role I had been given real responsibility in managing
a wide range of projects, from complete green field plants to individual machines and refurbishment
packages, all with the emphasis of working within a budget price. I worked within a design team
solving problems which were sales/customer based. When the proposal was sold it was then up to
the design office to meet with the customer and discuss the technical aspect of the project and to answer any technical queries he/she might have. During my time in the design office I spent one
month at our head office in Germany. There I learned the importance of good planning within major
projects, pricing current projects and also liasing with German speaking colleagues. I used a ME10
draughting package which is run on a UNIX platform in which I have gained a certificate in administration. All drawings were produced in accordance with the latest DIN/BS standards.
